VI Compatibility
If your car was built after 2004, it is very likely to have full OBD-II
compliance and you will enjoy the full functionality of VI. In vehicles built
before 2004, compatibility gets a bit hit and miss, but here's a rough guide to
help determine if your car is OBD-II compliant. If you are unsure whether your
vehicle is OBD-II, please contact the vehicle manufacturer.
Age & Country of Origin
OBD-II compliance became mandatory for all cars and light trucks built and sold
in the United States in 1996. In the UK, it's a bit more complicated.
- OBD-II became mandatory for new car designs in 2000.
- Models already in existence before 2000 were made compliant in vehicles BUILT
after 2001.
- All diesel vehicles were OBD-II from 2004.
Connector Plug
The image to the right is what a standard OBD plug looks like.
Generally, the OBD plug will be located within 3ft of the driver and is usually
hidden behind an easily removable panel. Common locations for this plug is under
the dash in either the driver or passenger foot well, behind the ashtray, near
the internal fuse box, or in the back the glove box.
Some vehicles also have diagnostics port in the engine bay but the OBD-II port
should be in the passenger compartment close to the drivers position (as above).
Label
On some OBD compliant vehicles, there will be a label or nameplate located inside
the engine bay (sometimes part of your VIN plate).
Modified Engine Management Systems
Vehicles built before the adoption of OBD-II may in some cases power up but will
not initiate the engine management data stream and will have limited
functionality or will not work at all.
NOTE- If you have upgraded/replaced the
factory fitted OBD-II compliant engine management system you should check with
the supplier of your new system whether it is still OBD-II compliant before
purchasing.

This illustrates the vehicle types and ages where OBD-II adoption varies and where it is best to double-check with vehicle documentation and us about likely compatibility.
